Dani Sordo reacts to interest from WRC’s newest constructor

Hyundai’s Dani Sordo has responded to interest in his services from the World Rally Championship’s newest manufacturer RMC Motorsport, which aims to join the championship next year.

Spanish team RMC Motorsport unveiled plans to join rallying’s top tier next year by confirming it will design and develop a car built to the WRC’s new 2027 technical regulations.

Operating under WRT Rally1 Spain moniker, the team founded by Roberto Mendez has a partnership with the governing body for Spanish motorsport RFEDA. The operation plans to contest at least half of the rounds next year, ahead of a full programme in 2028.

RMC Motorsport is yet to declare its driver line-up for next year but has stated that it wishes to promote Spanish talent and listed veteran three-time WRC rally winner Sordo among its possible targets.

“It is too soon to ask the question [of drivers]. We have very good drivers on the table and one of them is racing with Hyundai [Dani Sordo]. At the moment our priority is to build and develop the car. Then we will think about drivers. It is not decided yet,” said Manuel Avino FIA vice-president for sport, Europe and president of the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation during the team’s launch at Rally Islas Canarias.

“Fortunately, we have many good drivers in Spain. We are proud to have achieved [success] with the Solans [brothers Nil and Jan] and [Efren] Llarena [2022 ERC champion] and now we have Alejandro Cachon [WRC2 contender]. We have very good drivers at the moment and now the priority is to develop the car. We will see in the future.”

Long-time Hyundai driver Sordo was quizzed about RMC Motorsport’s interest in his services during Friday’s leg of the rally.

“If there is a Spanish team in the World Rally Championship, for sure I will help, but not for work,” said Sordo, who is making his first Rally1 start for Hyundai since Greece 2024 this weekend.

“I know the guy that will make the project, and he’s a good guy, and if I can help, for sure I will do it.”

When pressed on if his help would include driving, the 42-year-old added: “I don’t have anything in mind. Now the only thing in mind is to try to catch the Toyotas in Canarias. And then the Rally Portugal. Next, we’ll see.

“It [the new Spanish team] would be amazing [for Spanish rallying] but we have a lot of good young drivers like [WRC2 contender] Alejandro Cachon. I would like to be there, but we need to develop the younger drivers.”
