Hamilton leads Mercedes 1-2 from Norris in opening practice

Lewis Hamilton led a Mercedes 1-2 in Formula 1’s opening practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix after overhauling team-mate George Russell at the chequered flag.

Hamilton’s 1m35.001s headliner was set at the close of the session, as he found 0.396s over Russell in a session defined by ever-improving track conditions as the Las Vegas Strip slowly rubbered in with continued running.

Drivers encountered a low-grip surface to open the session with, as a thin layer of dust led Liam Lawson to remark that it was like driving in the wet.

This led to considerable track evolution in the opening half-hour of the session, with most conducting exploratory runs on the medium tyre. Max Verstappen set his first lap on softs, a 1m44.239s, but this was quickly overcome when Kevin Magnussen posted a 1m42.645s on mediums.

Further progression took the times below the 100-second mark; Russell put together a 1m39.595s, still on mediums, but was outpaced by Hamilton’s 1m38.155s effort.

Hamilton made further strides to set a 1m36.927s, a lap that withstood efforts from further medium-tyre laps before Ferrari went faster on the softs within the final 20 minutes.

Charles Leclerc found a 1m36.430s on the red-walled C5 tyre to move to the top of the order, although his team-mate Carlos Sainz took two tenths out of that effort to set a new benchmark.

The scope of track evolution continued with Lando Norris’ subsequent lap, which put him top of the order after he’d set a 1m35.954s on his own soft-tyre effort, which remained largely unbothered until the final five minutes.

Russell then unearthed a 1m35.619s, underlining the need to do a second prep lap with the cold track conditions, but there was room for further improvement; Hamilton found just under two tenths to reclaim top spot, before Russell fired back to the zenith of the order with 0.09s in hand — helped by a tow across the line from Pierre Gasly.

But Hamilton found a colossal 0.4s edge at the session’s climax to ensure he was clear of the field with a 1m35.001s.

This also put Hamilton 0.953s clear of third-placed Norris, who opted to close out the session with further running on the medium compound rather than join the Mercedes duo in chasing lap times on the soft.

Leclerc improved on his earlier headliner to claim fourth in the order to get ahead of Sainz, although the Ferraris ended up sandwiching Verstappen as the championship leader improved to fifth overall.

Fernando Alonso was seventh fastest over Oscar Piastri, as Gasly and Sergio Perez completed the top 10.

Neuville suffers power issue as Evans claims the lead

Thierry Neuville’s World Rally Championship title hopes took a knock after suffering a power issue while Toyota’s Elfyn Evans moved into the Rally Japan lead.

Championship leader Neuville won the day’s opening test and was sitting in second before a sudden loss of power hampered the Belgian, who only needs to score six points this weekend to secure a maiden world title.

Evans shot from third to the rally lead on stage three taking a 0.7s lead over Neuville’s title rival Ott Tanak heading into the midday tyre fitting zone, with Neuville sitting third, 40.2s adrift.

Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta climbed to fourth [+1m11.2s] after suffering a stage-two puncture.

Overnight leader Adrien Fourmaux held fifth [+1m13.5s] ahead of Hyundai’s Andreas Mikkelsen [+1m19.8s] while Gregoire Munster [+1m32.4s], Nikolay Gryazin [1m44.3s], Sebastien Ogier [+2m03.4s] and Sami Pajari [+2m31.0s] rounded out the top 10.

Friday’s opening stage proved to be a disaster for Toyota as the brand’s bid to overhaul the 15-point deficit to Hyundai in the manufacturers’ title battle took a significant hit.

Ogier and Katsuta suffered punctures in stage two, Isegami’s Tunnel (23.67km), which had been earmarked as potentially the toughest of the rally. The technical stage was dry with damp patches and a covering of leaves that made conditions particularly slippery and unpredictable.

Ogier stopped 11.7km into the test to change a front-left wheel, costing him 2m05.9s which dropped him well down the order.

“No idea [how it happened], The first few corners were very slippy and I was understeering,” said Ogier.

Katsuta was also oblivious as to why he suffered a puncture. The Japanese driver did manage to haul his GR Yaris to the stage end with a rear-left tyre off the rim, ceding 1m03s.

That meant Evans was the only Toyota driver to enjoy a clean run as he set the third fastest time on the stage to move into third overall.

But there was no stopping the Hyundais of championship leader Neuville and title rival Tanak as Toyota’s drama lifted the pressure on the pair.

Neuville, first on the road, set the pace to win the stage by 1.2s from Tanak, but it was the latter that surged into the rally lead by half a second from his team-mate.

“There was less leaves than expected but I tried to have a clean run,” said Neuville.

Such was the nature of the twisting roads that WRC2 runners Gryazin and Pajari were able to post the fourth and fifth fastest times respectively to move to fifth and sixth overall.

Overnight leader Fourmaux struggled to find grip in the slippery conditions, costing the Frenchman 46.9s as the M-Sport driver slid to fourth overall.

There was also a drama for Hyundai’s Mikkelsen as he was caught out by the leaves and mud on the road and went straight on at a left-hander. The Norwegian lost almost a minute to Neuville.

Toyota issued a fightback on stage three (Inabu/Shitara, 19.38km) as the recovering Ogier, struggling for motivation, took a stage win by 1.8s from team-mate Evans.

“I don’t know what to do at the moment. Speechless honestly. This section is definitely not my section, in the forest, we had a puncture two years ago in the same area. It is not easy to find motivation,” said Ogier.

Despite battling understeer, Tanak managed to extend his rally lead over Neuville to 1.9s with a clean run through the test that was much faster than the previous.

Given the sizeable gaps between the field after the first stage, Neuville adapted his speed to reduce the risk but was still fourth fastest ahead of Katsuta.

Mikkelsen was sixth quickest ahead of Fourmaux, who revealed that he was losing his brakes towards the end of the test.

However, the fight for the drivers’ title took another twist in the final stage of the loop, Shinshiro (17.41km), a brand new test for this year.

Neuville suffered a mysterious mechanical issue on his i20 N that limited the power delivery on his car. As a result the Belgian lost 37.6s to title rival Tanak but only dropped to third overall which is still enough for his title hopes, but it was unclear if the problem could be fixed at the following tyre fitting zone.

Evans took the stage win to claim the rally lead for Toyota by 0.7s from Tanak.

Gryazin led the WRC2 class by 46.7s from title hopeful Pajari, who was fortunate not to lose more time to a puncture in stage three. The Finn remained on course to win the WRC2 title after Gus Greensmith crashed while on course to snatch second from Pajari.

A repeat of the loop awaits the crews before two passes of the Okazaki Super Special stage concludes Friday’s action.

Tsunoda open to running Indy 500 «once I start getting a bit older»

RB Formula 1 driver Yuki Tsunoda isn’t ruling out the possibility of one day running in the Indianapolis 500 but insisted that would not come anytime soon.

The Japanese drove an IndyCar — prepared by Chip Ganassi Racing — for the first time on Tuesday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as part of a celebration of Honda’s ‘Hybrid Heroes’ ahead of this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, an outing which also saw Max Verstappen drive the Acura ARX-06 GTP machine.

After being coached by six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, Tsunoda made a couple of runs that lasted almost half-hour when combined and it was very evident he was pushing to the limit right away.

Asked by Autosport at the event if this experience provided interest in stepping into an Indycar in the future if an opportunity was presented and potentially mirroring the path of fellow countryman Takuma Sato and two-time Indy 500 winner, Tsunoda replied: «If I have [an] opportunity and I feel it’s the right time, for sure I would love to.

“I like the US itself, so I don’t mind living here as well.

“But I feel like it’s not the time because I can’t imagine I am driving at [Indianapolis Motor Speedway], more than a two-hour race and we do more than 200 mph or whatever every lap. For me, it’s scary. I can’t imagine myself driving more than two hours and being in that car. I don’t know. For now, I [am not] really aiming or thinking about IndyCar, but yeah, why not in the future?”

Elaborating on his comments regarding the challenge of tackling superspeedways and ovals, Tsunoda added: “Not afraid, but definitely doesn’t feel fully comfortable driving an oval.

“I respect the drivers a lot. Driving [Indianapolis] the two hours, like how can this driver drive in a circle, literally two hours next to the wall every lap. If you have a collision, it can be really, really big as well, so those things I can’t imagine right now. And right now, I’m not really thinking about the ovals.

“You know, [the Indy 500] is such a cool competition and most of the drivers will dream about being there, but currently I don’t have that target [or] anything. Once I start getting a bit older and my mentality of things change, maybe I’ll try at that point; drink the milk at the end of the race, hopefully.”

On his run in the CGR IndyCar, Tsunoda pointed to the lack of driver aids compared to his usual machinery in F1.

“It just feels a bit more like karting – you can play around more,” he said.

“Formula 1 cars are controlled by the systems, electronics, but this car feels more direct, so you have to still control the activation phase to control the sliding of the rear; that feels quite nice, especially [since] you can drift around a little bit [and] slide around in the car.

«So, that feels nice. Straightaway I felt comfortable, so able to push a little bit more.”

One of the unique elements, according to Dixon, was Tsunoda’s interest in learning every small element of the tools available in the car straight away, particularly the roll bars, engine modes and deployment of the hybrid system.

David Salters, the president of Honda Racing Corporation, confirmed to Autosport that it didn’t take long to give Tsunoda the chance to push the pace.

“It was quite impressive to see, like Turn 3, he was on full push,” Salters said.

“When we started off, taking it easy, the car was in practice mode and then he came in, and there was a bit of a side discussion for new boots and race-quali power. And he quite enjoyed that, I think.”

Hyundai to discuss expansion to four WRC cars in 2025

Hyundai has not ruled out the possibility of running a fourth car in the next year’s World Rally Championship, with a decision likely to come at Rally Japan.

Hyundai’s top management will be heading to this weekend’s WRC season finale where it is understood discussions regarding its plans for next year will be held.

The team is expected to field three significantly updated i20 N Rally1 machines next year with Thierry Neuville and Ott Tanak already confirmed to pilot two entries.

The driver line-up for its third car is yet to be confirmed, although M-Sport’s Adrien Fourmaux has been heavily linked to the seat that has this year been shared by Dani Sordo, Andreas Mikkelsen and Esapekka Lappi.

However, a fourth i20 N could also be on the cards for Hyundai next year according to team principal Cyril Abiteboul, who previously outlined wishes to add another car to the team’s Rally1 fleet last year.

This option for a potential fourth car is among the discussions to be held this weekend and if it is given the green light, it could add an extra curveball regarding Hyundai’s driver line-up.

“We are close [with our 2025 plans] but after Japan that [announcement] will be coming. We have said to all crews that we want to draw a line after this season, which has been a good season, and look at next year and the ambition of that and discuss that,” Abiteboul told Motorsport.com.

“We have some people coming from Hyundai’s headquarters this weekend at Rally Japan so that will also be an opportunity for them to be part of the discussion and come to certain conclusions for next year about the set-up, drivers and cars.

“I still have the ambition that we could have a fourth car in our line-up and that is one of the discussions we will have over the course of this weekend and that could have an impact on our driver choices.”

When pressed further on the topic of entering four Rally1 cars next year, Abiteboul suggested that the extra car would most likely be entered in selected events.

“The plan is not made but we are thinking maybe certain events, selected events,” he added. «It is something I would like to try and do for a number of reasons, not least because I think Toyota will line up a large number of cars for next year.”

Honda defends decision to not bring 2025 MotoGP prototype to Barcelona test

Honda has provided an explanation for not bringing any substantial updates to its MotoGP bike in Tuesday’s official test in Barcelona.

While rival manufacturers took big steps in their preparations for the forthcoming season during the seven hours of running at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Honda did not have its 2025 bike on hand to test, nor did it have any major new parts available to evaluate.

The situation particularly angered factory rider Joan Mir, who said: «The reality is that I didn’t have a lot of things to test, I had already tested everything before. I’ve done 70 laps with things I’ve tested at least twice.”

Read Also:

The unavailability of new parts at Honda was evident in the results, with its best runner Johann Zarco finishing 10th on the LCR-entered RC213V. Mir and team-mate Luca Marini ended up even further down in 15th and 18th on the factory bikes.

However, HRC boss Alberto Puig insisted there was a valid reason behind the Japanese marque taking a conservative approach in Barcelona.

Puig explained that Honda had been able to privately run several new components over the course of the year thanks to the concession system, and thus it did not find it sensible to bring anything notable to the official test.

«The 2025 prototype is built when you have something that fits you,» Puig told DAZN.

«As we have done so many tests during the year, it didn’t make sense to bring the prototype here. During the year we have been trying many things, and it didn’t make sense to bring a ‘black’ bike here, when we have had a ‘black’ bike for a large part of the year.»

Honda will conduct a private test in Jerez later this month, when some new upgrades that are in the pipeline for 2025 could finally be ready. But the Barcelona test was seen as crucial for manufacturers as it allowed them to run direct comparisons with data gathered from the previous weekend’s race at the same circuit.

Puig revealed that Honda’s focus in Barcelona was to understand and fix the chattering issue that has plagued Mir in the final months of the 2024 season.

«We had three important things to test, which we have been testing during the year, but we do not have a prototype as such,» he said.

Joan Mir, Honda Racing

«We work with different issues of the bike, for stability, braking, vibrations. It has not been easy to solve the vibrations. It’s not your typical chattering, it’s something bigger. It conditions the riders a lot. It is what has us most worried.”

Honda ended the season dead last in the championship on 75 points, 49 behind its nearest rival Yamaha.

LCR and HRC likewise finished 10th and 11th in the teams’ table, while Honda’s best-placed rider Zarco could only muster 17th place in the standings.

However, there was a visible improvement in Honda’s pace since September, allowing Zarco to break into the top 10 in two of the final six grands prix of the season.

«We end the year with the feeling of having made progress,» said Puig. «The bike didn’t turn very well, and after Misano it started to do so – now it turns well.”

Honda was boosted in Barcelona by the arrival of three-time grand prix winner Aleix Espargaro as a new test rider. Espargaro ended up 14th-quickest in the one-day test, ahead of both Mir and Marini.

Asked for his first impressions of the former Aprilia star, Puig said: «Aleix has the speed. We are very happy with how he has conveyed the opinion of his bike, in a very clear and direct way. I liked the forcefulness with which he spoke, very impartial. It has given us very interesting information.”
