Jorge Martin suffers another crash in Barcelona test, taken to hospital

Jorge Martin has been taken to the medical centre in an ambulance after registering his sixth crash of the weekend in the Barcelona test.

An hour and a half into the official MotoGP test at the Circuit de Catalunya on Monday morning, a red flag appeared on the timing screens, sending all the riders back to the pits.

The cause of the interruption was Martin, who had suffered a heavy fall at Turn 7. The photographers present in the area confirmed that the rider was conscious and testing the movement of his limbs. Nevertheless, medical personnel placed a neck brace on Martin before loading him into an ambulance.

At 11:38am, the rider arrived at the medical centre, where the blinds were closed, preventing anyone from seeing him get out of the ambulance.

For Martin, Monday’s crash was his sixth of the weekend. The rider started the Catalan GP with a very heavy impact in FP1, suffering a slight concussion from which he quickly recovered. However, he crashed again in Friday’s practice session. On Saturday, he flew through Q1 on his Aprilia, but the bike was out of commission for Q2. In the Sprint race, the Madrid native crashed again, bringing his total to four crashes.

In Sunday’s race, after avoiding the dangers of the first two starts, the Aprilia rider was hit by Trackhouse rider Fernandez, suffering his fifth crash of the weekend.

Just when it seemed things couldn’t get any worse, Martin crashed again on Monday and had to return to the medical centre. There, members of the Aprilia team assured Motorsport.com that the rider was «conscious and calm,» that the hardest hit had been «on his elbow» (without specifying which one), and that they were taking X-rays and conducting tests to determine if there was any further damage.

Aprilia later issued a statement, revealing that he will be taken to a hospital for further tests.

«Following the crash at Turn 7, Jorge Martin was taken to the circuit’s medical centre for checks, primarily to his left elbow and right leg,» it said. «Examinations performed at the circuit’s medical centre revealed no visible fractures, but it was decided to take Martin to the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona for further tests.»

The scans at hospital confirmed that Martin did not suffer any fracture.
