Honda yet to find the direction it wants with MotoGP bike

Despite showing some impressive signs of recovery over the winter, and benefitting from a new concession system that came into force this year, Honda has struggled to make much progress at the beginning of the 2024 season.

Approaching this weekend’s French Grand Prix, it sits at the bottom of the constructors’ standings on just 13 points, having failed to break inside the top 10 even once during the opening four rounds of the year.

Honda has been working on a new ‘lab bike’ whose development is led by test rider Stefan Bradl, but both factory rider Joan Mir and Johann Zarco were unimpressed with how it behaved on track — with Zarco even going back to the previous-spec bike at the recent Jerez test.

Speaking about Honda’s recent run of form, Puig said the team is still figuring out where it should be heading with the development of the RC213V.

«If we can understand the direction to go, we can try to take steps forward,” he said. “Of course, many of the things you discover are not automatic. You probably won’t be able to use them in the next grand prix, but you can start preparing other parts.

«We have to continue doing what we are doing. We are working hard. Honda is not sleeping, this is something I have to say. The only certain thing is that we have not yet been able to find the direction we hope and want.”

Puig’s remarks are in contrast with the comments made by race rider Mir, who felt Honda had found a ‘clear direction’ with its MotoGP concept at the post-Spanish GP test. That was despite the 2020 champion also rejecting the ‘lab bike’, which he had ridden previously in a private test.

Puig made it clear that Honda is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to return to the front of the grid and is now taking advantage of its entire four-rider roster to test new parts, which are being introduced at an increasingly rapid rate.

The Japanese marque has also been working closely with its satellite team LCR this season, which means both new recruit Zarco and protege Taakaki Nakagami have a role to play in shaping the RC213V.

«I can say more or less what we have been saying in recent months: We are trying many, many things, and we are trying to find a solution because we are still not clearly where we want to be,” he said.

“We have four riders and we are trying to use them all to try different things. So everyone is trying different things. We are trying to find the best possible combinations, of course.

«Stefan Bradl tested the bike and we collected a lot of data. The sensations were good. It’s not bad. It’s not perfect, there are things to improve.

“I can’t give a specific comment, but I think the Jerez test is very important, because we have all four drivers trying different things, different combinations, and at the end of the day we will have some important conclusions.»

Dall’Igna ‘won’t let go’ of Marquez as 2025 MotoGP decision looms

Marquez, Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini are all in the running for a coveted seat at the works Ducati team next year, as the Italian manufacturer weighs up which rider to put alongside double champion Francesco Bagnaia.

Although Ducati initially had reservations about Marquez joining its satellite Gresini team this year, it eventually gave the Spaniard the blessing to ride a year-old GP23 — and it has only grown fond of him since then.

The 31-year-old’s star status, history of winning multiple titles and his approach towards racing makes him an attractive option for Ducati, although it is also aware of the impact it could have on the harmony of the team.

The Borgo Panigale marque has indicated that the identity of Bagnaia’s team-mate could be revealed as early as next month’s Italian Grand Prix, and one person who will play a key role in the decision is its general manager Dall’Igna.

Petrucci knows Dall’Igna well from his time at Ducati in 2019-20, a stint that yielded race wins at Mugello and Le Mans, and he thinks Marquez is best placed to earn a factory promotion next year.

“I don’t have any inside information, but I have a hunch that Marquez will go there,» Petrucci told GPOne. «I don’t know if there will be any problems with the energy drinks sponsorship [Marquez is a Red Bull-backed rider while Ducati is sponsored by Monster].

“But from what I understand — which I would feel for Enea — Gigi Dall’Igna doesn’t let a rider like Marquez get away.

“He led Ducati to victory because he is relentless in his method of reasoning, in the sense that he is relentless in pursuing his goal.

«Gigi can be likeable or dislikeable, but he has led Ducati to be the reference in MotoGP. Knowing his way of reasoning, I think he wants to find out what a rider like Marquez can do on his bike.»

Marquez and Bagnaia fought tooth-and-nail for victory in the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez last weekend, with the latter eventually coming out on top in their epic duel by just four-tenths of a second.

Petrucci questioned whether Bagnaia would want his unofficial number-one status at Ducati to be jeopardised by the arrival of Marquez.

«Considering that Pecco is in an incredible moment and that he has always made the difference when needed, I don’t know if he will like Marc’s arrival,” he said.

“Maybe that’s also something to take into account here, the human side inside the box. They would be two great champions, each doing their duty.”

Should Marquez get the second seat at Ducati, it would come at the expense of Bastianini, whose first campaign with the team in 2023 was heavily impacted by injuries.

Pramac rider Martin also had made it clear that he would accept nothing other than a factory ride at Ducati, having made it clear he has done everything he could to convince the bosses he is worthy of a promotion.

Martin is leading the championship ahead of this weekend’s French GP, and also finished runner-up to Bagnaia last year.

«I feel very sorry for Enea, because in my opinion, he has not performed as well as he could have done without the injury last year,” Petrucci said.

“I don’t think he has reached his full potential on the factory Ducati and I hope he does.

“It’s clear that Martin would like to ride that bike, and he deserves it, and I would also like Marco Bezzecchi to ride it, I encourage him.

“In the end, they will evaluate the results, it won’t be easy, but the only thing I hope is that they don’t make hasty decisions, based on the moment.”

Jerez MotoGP round «a reality check» for KTM

The Spanish GP at Jerez proved to be one of KTM’s best weekends of the 2023 campaign, with Brad Binder winning the sprint and finishing second in the main race ahead of team-mate Jack Miller.

With Tech3 GasGas rookie Acosta coming to the 2024 Jerez round off the back of successive podium finishes, he and the rest of the KTM stable were expected to show strong.

However, sixth was the best a KTM rider could manage in the grand prix – courtesy of Binder – while Acosta was 10th.

Speaking after the Spanish GP, Acosta said the brand came to Jerez “with too many illusions” and it would be served well to adjust expectations going forward.

«In general, I’m talking about the brand, not just me, I think we came with too many expectations to do very well here,” he began.

“And you have to understand that we are not the only ones improving, other brands are improving as well.

“I think [with] this excessive expectation [it] will be good for us this year to take it easy on the races that went well last year and see what happens from the beginning.

“We all came in with too many illusions.”

He added, when pressed on people’s expectations of the 19-year-old: “I don’t care about people’s expectations, I long ago stopped listening to outside noise and the words of people like [Jorge] Lorenzo, who obviously know about motorcycles.

“But here nobody knows what’s going to happen until you cross the finish line.

“You can also be in the lead for all the laps of a race and fall or be overtaken at the last corner, so predictions are of little use.

“I don’t care about that aspect. I’m talking about the expectations of the brand, last year’s results were a weekend that KTM had never seen before and that led us, all of us, to imagine a grand prix [in Spain] with too high expectations.

«I think this reality check for the brand will allow us to put our feet on the ground for the Misano weekend, for example, where last year Binder and Pedrosa did very well and this year we will be more relaxed.”

Despite the difficult weekend for the KTM brand, Acosta still sits fourth in the championship and is only 23 points off leader Jorge Martin.
