Drugovich joins Action Express Cadillac line-up for Le Mans 24 Hours


The Brazilian will fill the vacancy at the factory Action Express Racing team for the French enduro on 15-16 June and join Pipo Derani and Jack Aitken, the team’s full-season drivers in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, in the #311 Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh.

Drugovich has landed a factory drive in the Hypercar class after taking his first steps in sportscar racing this year in the European Le Mans Series.

He joined the Vector Sport LMP2 squad for his first race campaign since winning the 2022 Formula 2 Championship, but it was made clear from the outset that he wouldn’t be racing the British team’s ORECA-Gibson 07 at Le Mans.

Action Express team manager Gary Nelson revealed that Drugovich had been “on our radar for a couple of years”.

“After watching him race a sportscar in the ELMS recently, we finally got a chance to meet him and work with him in some simulator testing,” he explained.

“We were impressed by his maturity, discipline and knowledge. Next, we took Felipe to a track test, where he shared our car with Pipo and Jack.

“We are very excited to take the next obvious step and enter Felipe alongside Pipo and Jack at Le Mans. His record speaks volumes.”

Drugovich described the chance to race for Cadillac and Action Express at Le Mans as “the most important opportunity in my racing career up to now”.

“The Le Mans 24 Hours is impossible to define in words, such is its magic and importance for cars in general and motor racing in particular,” said the 23-year-old, who is a two-time winner of the Le Mans Virtual Esports event.

“I barely touched the magic of Le Mans twice winning the virtual editions — now I am going to plunge into it for real. What a privilege having another dream come true.”

Drugovich takes a berth filled by Tom Blomqvist in the IMSA series: he is the Action Express team’s endurance driver for the long-distance races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Indianapolis and Road Atlanta.

Cadillac has now filled its full driver line-up for its three-car Le Mans assault made up of its regular solo WEC V-Series.R and its two IMSA entries.

Current IndyCar champion Alex Palou is joining Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn in the #2 Ganassi-run Cadillac Racing WEC car, while Scott Dixon teams up again with Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande in the team’s IMSA entry, #3.

Pilet joins Vector Sport for Le Mans 24 Hours


The Frenchman, the GT Le Mans IMSA SportsCar Championship class title winner in 2015 with the German manufacturer, will share Vector’s LMP2 ORECA-Gibson 07 with Stephane Richelmi and Ryan Cullen in what will be his 16th start at the French enduro.

Gabriel Aubry, who was part of Vector’s WEC P2 line-up last year, was originally listed in the car but was not expected to be part of the team’s line-up at Le Mans on 15/16 June. 

Aston Martin Formula 1 test and reserve driver Felipe Drugovich races alongside Richelmi and Cullen in the European Le Mans Series but was never part of Vector’s plans for the 24 Hours. 

Vector team boss Gary Holland said: «We are very pleased to welcome Patrick: he is a proven winner and a great addition to the team. 

«His previous experience in both LMP2 and GT will be extremely valuable as we aim for the top step at La Sarthe.»

Holland also thanked Porsche for allowing Pilet, 42, to take up the drive.  

Pilet added: «I am really looking forward to working with the team at Vector Sport.

Le Mans this year will be Pilet’s fifth outing at the wheel of a P2 ORECA in the big race. 

He drove for the IDEC team in 2000-22 before moving to Graff last year. 

Before that he was a stalwart of the Porsche factory GTE Pro squad run by Manthey, racing one of its 911 RSRs every year from 2013. 

IMSA SportsCar Championship regular Romain De Angelis will make his Le Mans debut with the Algarve Pro Racing LMP2 team. 

The Canadian, IMSA GT Daytona champion in 2022 with the Heart of Racing Aston Martin squad, will drive APR’s #25 entry alongside Olli Caldwell and Matthias Kaiser.

That is where the motorsport triple crown comes in, as it can only be awarded to a driver who has achieved success across different racing disciplines.

So, what is the triple crown and who has claimed this feat?

What is the motorsport triple crown?

The triple crown consists of three races, each one showcasing a driver’s skill in a different racing discipline. It includes the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Monaco Grand Prix. These are generally regarded as the three most prestigious races in motorsport and typically take place every year from the end of May to beginning of June, though the triple crown is an unofficial title meaning no trophy gets awarded.

The Indy 500 is the oldest of the three races, as drivers first tackled 500 miles of Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1911, 12 years before the inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Monaco GP is the newest of the three races, as the principality first hosted its now-famous race in 1929 when William Grove-Williams won in his Bugatti.

The triple crown is a notoriously difficult feat to achieve, partly due to the fact that the races form part of different series and racing disciplines. The Indy 500 is part of the IndyCar season, Le Mans is a round of the World Endurance Championship (and before that the World Sportscar Championship amongst others), while Monaco is a mainstay on the F1 calendar.

But this wasn’t always the case. The Indy 500 found its way onto the F1 calendar in the 1950s, yet participation was limited as many non-American drivers and manufacturers opted against travelling to the US with the race being run to different regulations.

That’s why – to this day – Graham Hill is the only racing driver in history to have accomplished the much-revered triple crown. Hill took his first of five Monaco GP victories in 1963 and won the Indy 500 in 1966 at his first time of trying.

Le Mans proved trickier for Hill to master. He entered the endurance race every year from 1958 to 1966 and his best result during that period was second in 1964 — he retired from the race on six other occasions.

It was only in 1972, at his final time of trying, that Hill emerged victorious. Hill joined the Matra sports car team at a time when his F1 career was drawing to a close, racing alongside Henri Pescarolo. The duo won the race by an impressive 11-lap margin over the team’s sister-car.

From a racing team standpoint, McLaren is the only one to have accomplished the triple crown. Beginning with the Indy 500, where the British outfit won the 1972, 1974 and 1976 editions, the team went on to take its first of 15 Monaco GP victories in 1984. The team claimed its sole Le Mans win in 1995 when JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya won for the team on its race debut.

Current drivers who could take the motorsport triple crown

Fernando Alonso has made no secret of his pursuit for the illustrious triple crown, as the 2006 and 2007 Monaco GP winner turned much of his focus to other motor racing categories in the late 2010s.

This began in 2017 when the then-McLaren driver skipped the Monaco GP to enter the Indy 500. Despite a strong showing in the early stages where Alonso ran no lower than 12th, it ended in disappointment as his Honda engine blew with 21 laps left. Alonso then switched his focus to Le Mans by competing in the 2018-19 WEC campaign for Toyota, with which he won the championship alongside co-drivers Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima to take two thirds of the triple crown.

Juan Pablo Montoya is the only other current driver to have completed two-thirds of the triple crown — and he’s arguably come closer than Alonso. Montoya won the 2000 and 2015 editions of the Indy 500, as well as the 2003 Monaco GP. Although Montoya won at the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans, it was in the LMP2 Pro-Am class — hypercar is the top category — meaning he did not take outright victory so it doesn’t count towards triple crown glory.

Of the current racing crop, there are several drivers who have claimed one third of the triple crown. This includes MoneyGram Haas F1 Team driver, Nico Hulkenberg, who dominated the 2015 edition of Le Mans, alongside team-mates Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber.

There are of course a host of current F1 drivers to have won the Monaco GP. Of the still-active ones (Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo and Sergio Perez), Ricciardo perhaps has the strongest chance of attempting the remarkable triple crown. While others have played down any interest in racing stateside, Ricciardo is fond of US racing culture and it’s well-known he was courted by IndyCar teams when his F1 future looked uncertain in 2022. He also came close to contesting the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 2015, before his then-team Red Bull blocked the opportunity.

 Other versions of the motorsport triple crown

As the triple crown is an unofficial title, its definition is hotly debated. For example, Jacques Villeneuve believes that it should include the F1 world championship instead of Monaco — a definition created by Hill himself.

If it were to be adopted, Hill would remain the only triple crown winner to date, while Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and Villeneuve would have all completed two-thirds of the title.

There is also a triple crown dedicated for endurance racing. The endurance triple crown is given to those who win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Sebring 12 Hours during their career. Nine drivers currently hold this particular triple crown, and this would be 10 were it not for the famous photo finish at the 1966 Le Mans race where Ken Miles lost his victory to Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon.

Lamborghini not concerned over Le Mans reliability despite rain-interrupted test


The track was wet for the majority of the three days of testing at Portimao for the single long-distance test scheduled by Lamborghini and its Iron Lynx factory squad ahead of the double-points round of the World Endurance Championship on 15-16 June, team principal Andrea Piccini has revealed. 

But the ability of the new-for-2024 Lambo SC63 to go the distance without significant issues on its first appearances in the WEC and the IMSA SportsCar Championship in North America has allayed any fears over reliability, he insisted. 

“There was a lot of rain and it was not ideal,” Piccini said of the test at the Portuguese Algarve circuit on 26-28 March. 

“But we don’t think it will be a problem: we’ve finished a 10-hour WEC race at Qatar and a 12-hour IMSA race at Sebring, so the reliability seems good,” he said.

“I don’t think reliability is the problem; more important for us is to work on the performance of the car — that is our focus right now.”

The SC63’s race finishes on debut at Qatar and then at Sebring in 13th and seventh positions respectively were followed up by another clean run on the way to 12th position in last weekend’s Imola WEC race.

Piccini explained that the WEC schedule does not allow time for another endurance run before Le Mans, when Iron Lynx’s solo WEC entry will be joined by the SC63 competing in three of the IMSA enduros this year. 

“After Portimao we had to get ready for Imola and then we are into Spa [round three of the 2024 WEC on 11 May] and after that it will all be about preparing the cars for Le Mans,” he said. 

Piccini did not put a figure on the mileage the Lambo achieved at Portimao’s Algarve circuit, but he stressed that the test was still of value. 

“Quite often you have to race in the rain at Le Mans,” he said. “We did get some dry laps, probably about a third of the running.”

Piccini confirmed that Iron Lynx and Lamborghini have abandoned the plan outlined on the launch of the SC63 last year to field its IMSA car alongside its regular WEC entry in Austin at the beginning of September.

He pointed out that there would unlikely be room for an additional entry at a circuit with one of the smaller pit garage allocations on the WEC schedule, adding that it would also be difficult for the team to run a second car. 

“Doing Le Mans with two cars is already difficult in our first year, so it is not in plan now,” he said.

Vettel impressed Porsche in 963 test but no Le Mans decision yet


Vettel completed almost two grand prix distances over four stints in Porsche Penske Motorsport’s 963 hypercar in testing at Aragon in Spain, logging 118 laps in its major pre-Le Mans, 36-hour endurance test.

Porsche’s director of factory racing, Urs Kuratle, remarked that Vettel “mastered it extremely well”.

“Sebastian certainly doesn’t have to prove that he can drive a car,» Kuratle told Motorsport.com’s sister site, Motorsport-Total.com. “He had a certain amount of respect for the unknown car but handled it very well.”

Kuratle knows Vettel from their days together at BMW-Sauber in Formula 1 in 2007: “He is still the same Sebastian, who really gets his teeth into these kinds of things. It was really a refreshing experience to learn about his impressions.

“Even for a four-time Formula 1 world champion, there were so many new things to deal with: a new team and a fairly complex car. He mastered it extremely well.”

Vettel has not taken part in any competitive racing since leaving F1, although he is understood to have been in preliminary talks last year with Porsche customer squad Jota for a World Endurance Championship programme.

Porsche will enter a third factory car at Le Mans to boost its chances, having taken pole position, victory and a double podium finish in the inaugural round of the 2024 WEC season in Qatar.

Porsche’s WEC star Kevin Estre said of Vettel’s approach to the test run: “He was definitely motivated. I saw him briefly before I got in and he was talking to the engineer, looking at the telemetry and hanging on the radio. He wanted to know everything. He did his job.”

Vettel has also been linked with an F1 comeback next year, most notably after a media tour last week to promote a sports drink, when he said it “might be appealing and interesting”.

“He’s talking to various people; we only read about it in the press,» added Kuratle of the speculation. “Nothing has been decided yet about what he will do, when he will drive or whether he will drive for us in the future.

“That will only become clear in the next few days or weeks. There is not even a date yet when it will be decided what, how and where he will drive.”

Porsche has until 19 May to name its drivers for Le Mans and only Mathieu Jaminet has been named in the #4 PPM hypercar entry, with its other IMSA drivers eager to take the vacant spots. 

Vettel was joined in the test by regular WEC drivers Estre, Matt Campbell, Michael Christensen, Frederic Makowiecki, Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor – along with reigning DTM champion Thomas Preining.

“We always look for the best possible solution for the company, for the team, and we have many drivers,” said Kuratle. “I personally believe that we have the ten best drivers in sports car racing. That’s more than enough to have three cars [with three drivers each] at Le Mans.”

Vettel still unsure about 2024 Le Mans debut after Porsche test


Vettel covered 581km at the wheel of Porsche Penske Motorsport’s WEC challenger at Motorland Aragon earlier this week. The four-time Formula 1 world champion had previously taken part in a simulator day as well as an inaugural run at the German marque’s Weissach track.

Despite playing down future opportunities before the test, claiming «at the moment there are no further plans for the future», Vettel has now acknowledged the possibility of taking part in the French endurance classic for the first time.

Speaking during a press conference in his role as Perple sports drink’s ambassador, Vettel clarified: «I was curious how these cars behave, and that was the reason for the test. It was a very nice experience, I enjoyed it a lot, I had a lot of fun.

«Now I need to think and decide, and make my mind up what I maybe want to do in terms of racing in the future. But I don’t know yet.»

Vettel retired from F1 at the end of the 2022 campaign, concluding a successful 16-year career during which he took 57 pole positions and 122 podium finishes, including 53 race wins.

When he announced his retirement in July 2022, the German explained: «My goals have shifted from winning races and fighting for championships to seeing my children grow, passing on my values, helping them up when they fall, listening to them when they need me, not having to say goodbye and most importantly being able to learn from them and let them inspire me.»

Therefore, Vettel has not taken part in any competitive racing since leaving F1, although he is understood to have been in preliminary talks with Porsche customer squad Jota for a WEC programme last year.

Porsche will now enter a third factory car at Circuit de la Sarthe to boost its chances, having taken pole position, victory and a double podium finish in the inaugural round of the 2024 WEC season in Qatar earlier this month.

Porsche had previously stated that it would use its IMSA SportsCar Championship roster to complete the line-up for its third Le Mans entry, leaving Nick Tandy, Felipe Nasr and Dane Cameron as the only drivers in the running to share the #4 car alongside Mathieu Jaminet, who has already been nominated by the German constructor on the entry list.

Porsche had been planning to announce the full line-up in either late March or early April but might have changed its stance following Vettel’s successful test in Spain.

As a potential Le Mans debut becomes more credible, Vettel was asked whether he would have the Perple drink in his car during those 24 Hours. «If I decide to… I’ll tell you what, it was in the drinks pouch when I tested the car!» he replied. «So yeah, should I race in Le Mans, 100% it will be there, because it’s exactly what I would need at a race where you sit in the car for a very long time.»

Vettel logs 581km in “definitely fun” Aragon Porsche 963 test


Vettel, the 53-time Formula 1 race winner, had previously driven PPM’s simulator in Flacht in Germany before a brief run at Porsche’s fabled Weissach test track on 21 March.

In fair weather conditions at Aragon in Spain today, the 36-year-old completed 118 laps over four stints behind the wheel.

«Of course, I also keep an eye on other motorsport disciplines and know many drivers who are active in the WEC and Le Mans,” said Vettel. “At some point, my curiosity was so great that I had the idea of trying it out myself.

“Porsche gave me the opportunity to test a current hypercar with the 963. After the seat adjustment, the simulator session and the roll-out in Weissach, I already had a good feeling.

“Driving the Porsche 963 on the track here in Aragon – that was definitely fun. I first had to get used to everything and find my rhythm. The driving experience is different simply because of the roof over your head, as well as dealing with the higher weight and the tyres.

“The Porsche works drivers were very helpful and explained to me what was special and what I needed to get used to. That made it easy for me.”

Vettel, who called time on his F1 career at the end of 2022, is known to have been in preliminary talks with Porsche customer team Jota last year over driving one of its 963 prototypes in the World Endurance Championship.

And while sportscar racing appears to be an option that piques Vettel’s interest, the German stressed he has “no further plans” as things stand.

The Porsche Penske Motorsport works team has won both the season opener of the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, and this year’s first WEC race in Qatar.

Later this year, Porsche is aiming for its record-extending 20th overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Speaking about his team’s long distance test, PPM’s managing director Jonathan Diuguid said: “Aragon is one of the few places in Europe where we can run around the clock and gives us an opportunity to run 36 hours straight in preparation for Le Mans. The quite long back straight that gives us the top speed of more than 300 km/h we see on the Circuit des 24 Heures.

“Having Sebastian Vettel here is a unique opportunity for the team. He is a four-time Formula 1 World Champion. He has massive experience with hybrid systems and high performance racing cars.

“Having his fresh unique perspective on where the car is and gives feedback on our systems and performances is a unique opportunity. We are happy to have him here.

“He came out of the car with a smile which is all good.»

Four-time F1 world champion Vettel to test Porsche’s Le Mans hypercar


Vettel will take the wheel of the 963, which Porsche runs in collaboration with American powerhouse Penske, at a 36-hour test at MotorLand Aragon in Spain.

The 36-year-old German has already turned his first laps of the prototype at Porsche’s Weissach base following extensive simulator running.

“I’m looking forward to testing the Porsche 963. I already got the chance to get a feel for the car during a rollout in Weissach,” said Vettel.

“I’ve always followed other racing series and my curiosity for endurance events encouraged me to just give it a shot. Now I’m excited about the long run in Aragon and I’m looking forward to my time behind the wheel.

«It’ll definitely take an adjustment and some getting used to but everyone in the team is very open and helps me. This will be a new experience for me.»

Porsche Motorsport vice president Thomas Laudenbach revealed Vettel had asked him if there was an opportunity to join a test, with Porsche more than happy to accommodate him.

“We’re delighted that Sebastian Vettel is interested in our Porsche 963,” explained Laudenbach.

“There was no question for us that we’d be thrilled to support his request for an opportunity to test and provide him with extensive preparation and plenty of time to drive our hybrid prototype.»

Vettel, who called time on his F1 career at the end of 2022, is known to have been in preliminary talks with Porsche customer team Jota last year over driving one of its 963 prototypes in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

But while endurance racing appears to be an option that piques Vettel’s interest, the German stressed he has «no further plans» as things stand.

«We will see what happens next in this respect – at the moment there are no further plans for the future,» he specified.

Vettel will join a planned 36-hour endurance test at Aragon’s popular testing venue with six of Porsche Penske’s works drivers as it gears up for June’s Le Mans 24 Hours.

The team recently took its first victory in WEC’s hypercar era at the opening round in Qatar with Andre Lotterer, Laurens Vanthoor and Kevin Estre.

It will add a third car to the works line-up for Le Mans to boost its chances of a first overall win in the French endurance classic since 2017.

Since its introduction last year, the Porsche 963 has also found success in America’s IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, taking three wins in 2023 as well as a victory at the Daytona 24 Hours early this year.
