Dillmann/Boulle score overall win, Corvette dominates GTD

The Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca of Dillmann/Boulle beat the similar cars of Gar Robinson/Filipe Fraga and Steven Thomas/Scott Huffaker in Sunday’s 2h40m race, which featured a 34-car entry.

The premier class GTP hybrids took a break from the fearsome 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course near Toronto, formerly known as Mosport. Although those cars weren’t here, some of the top drivers still made the trip north of the border to drive the LMP2 machinery – as the clashing World Endurance Championship race at Interlagos also complicated matters.

Polewinner PJ Hyett (AO Racing) led the field to green but drifted across to the outside lane of traffic at the startline, repeating the error he made at Watkins Glen and receiving the same penalty, a drive-through.

That handed the lead to Daniel Goldburg (United Autosports) over Boulle, Robinson (Riley) and George Kurtz (Crowdstrike by APR), with Hyett rejoining in sixth. Another penalty befell the #2 United Autosports entry, as Ben Keating was given drive-through for changing tires on the grid.

Dennis Andersen, who shunted the #20 MDK by High Class Racing at Turn 2 in qualifying, got shoved off through some trackside signage at Turn 8 in opening moments of the race. The first caution flew after 20 minutes, as Andersen went off again into the tires at Turn 9 and this sent the majority to the pits.

After the reset, Boulle – who had taken the lead from Goldburg before the yellow – led Kurtz, Robinson, Goldburg and Thomas (TDS Racing).

A second yellow was required 20 minutes later when Orey Fidani’s GTD Corvette slammed the Turn 3 barriers after getting fired off by Bryan Sellers’ Paul Miller Racing BMW.

Soon after the restart, leader Boulle was delayed trying to pass a tardy GTD car at Turn 1, then Robinson was shoved wide by Kurtz as cars flew in all directions at Turn 2. Thomas vaulted to second, and Luis Perez Companc followed him through in AF Corse’s car. The big loser was Kurtz, who tumbled to eighth and he quickly handed over to Colin Braun, who rejoined 24th overall with it all to do.

The majority of the amateur drivers handed over to their pros with 90 minutes to go, with Dillmann (in for Boulle) leading Scott Huffaker (in for Thomas) by 3s.

The United duo of Ben Hanley (sharing with Keating and bouncing back from its earlier penalty) and Felipe Albuquerque (partnered with Goldburg) ran third and fourth, ahead of Fraga (in for Robinson), Louis Deletraz (taking over from Hyett), Pipo Derani (in for Companc), Braun and Renger van der Zande (who’d earlier been delayed when John Farano incurred a drive-through for a pitstop infringement).

Fraga passed Deletraz for fourth when the Acura GTP regular went off at Turn 9 and continued. Deletraz lost another spot to Albuquerque before making his final stop with 45 minutes remaining.

Dillmann had a scare when he banged wheels with Derani at Moss Corner inside the final 20 minutes, which allowed Huffaker to close right up.

Fraga, who was the last pro driver to take over, ran long and led until making his final stop inside the last 30 minutes – benefitting from a shorter fuel fill to rejoin third. Albuquerque was fifth, while Deletraz spun after clashing with Braun.

The third and final yellow flew with 16m left on the clock when Ryan Dalziel crashed at The Esses. But just before that, Huffaker ran wide over the grass and gifted second to Fraga.

The race went green with eight minutes to go, with Dillmann being chased by Fraga, Huffaker, Hanley and Albuquerque. That’s how they finished, with van der Zande snatching sixth from Braun and Deletraz.

Corvette dominates GTD Pro

In GTD, Corvette Racing ruled the roost as Alexander Sims/Antonio Garcia won from Tommy Milner/Nicky Catsburg. After the late caution period, they finished nose-to-tail.

Sims led from the start in his #3 Corvette Z06 GT3.R and the ’Vette 1-2 was achieved when Tommy Milner’s #4 car passed the #14 Lexus of Vasser Sullivan’s Jack Hawksworth around the outside at The Esses at the end of the opening lap.

In the second hour, Harry Tincknell split the Corvettes in his #64 Multimatic Ford Mustang, but that car fell back to fourth in the final reckoning in Mike Rockenfeller’s hands, as Seb Priulx/Laurin Heinrich grabbed third in their AO Racing Porsche 911.

The #14 Lexus was a surprise retirement with a technical issue in the closing stages.

The Turner Motorsports BMW M4 of Robby Foley/Patrick Gallagher and the Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage of Roman De Angelis/Spencer Pumpelly were duelling for the lead of the pro-am class when Gallacher spun at Moss Corner, dropping him to fourth.

That handed the Aston the win and second to the #57 Winward Mercedes of Russell Ward/Philip Ellis from the Inception Racing McLaren 720S of Brendon Iribe and Frederik Schandorff.

AO Racing’s Hyett takes pole, Corvette tops GTD

PJ Hyett took pole position for the IMSA SportsCar Championship at the LMP2-led round at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Hyett’s AO Racing Oreca beat the similar cars of Daniel Goldburg (United Autosports) and Gar Robinson (Riley) in qualifying for Sunday’s race, which features a 34-car entry.

The premier class GTP hybrids have taken a break from the fearsome 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course near Toronto, formerly known as Mosport. Although those cars weren’t here, some of the top drivers still made the trip north of the border to drive the LMP2 machinery.

But, as per the series rules, the stars had to stand down for qualifying.

Goldburg set the benchmark at 1m10.119s, outpacing George Kurtz (Crowdstrike by APR) by 0.061s, but a red flag was quickly required when Dennis Andersen shunted the #20 MDK by High Class Racing at Turn 2. He was able to walk away from the wreckage after a high-speed spin ended in the tirewall at the unforgiving track.

With only five minutes on the clock for the resumption, finding a clear lap was at a premium. Robinson snatched provisional pole with a 1m10.031s and then a 1m09.690s.

The times then tumbled, with Hyett – who will share with Louis Deletraz tomorrow – taking P1 with 1m09.582s, from Goldburg’s 1m09.672s. But the red flag flew again when Luis Perez Companc ploughed his #88 AF Corse entry underneath the tirewall at Turn 3.

Robinson will start third, ahead of Nick Boulle’s #52 Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports entry. Steven Thomas was fifth quickest for TDS Racing, ahead of Kurtz, Ben Keating (#2 United Autosports) and John Farano (Tower Motorsports).

The session was restarted, but not for enough time for anyone to set a laptime.

Corvette beats Lexus in GTD Pro

In GTD, qualifying got off to a false start when the red flag flew for Conquest Racing’s Ferrari 296, when Manny Franco ground to a halt at the pit exit.

That led to a truncated 10-minute sprint to decide pole, with Vasser Sullivan’s Jack Hawksworth becoming the first to dip under the 1m15s bracket with a 1m14.972s in his #14 Lexus RC F.

Fellow Brit Alexander Sims, driving the #3 Corvette Z06 GT3.R grabbed provisional pole from him with 1m14.911s, only for Hawksworth to snatch it back with 1m14.710s. That gave him a 0.271s advantage, as Sims backed off for a lap to regroup.

Sims then unleashed a 1m14.405s, taking the top spot by 0.235s, to which Hawksworth could not respond. Sims rubbed it in by going even quicker on his last lap, with a 1m14.373s – extending his advantage to 0.267s. That meant he’d set two laps good enough for pole.

“The car was incredible around this amazing place, I got a couple of really nice, clear laps – that was a really good blast,” said Sims. “We hadn’t been sure which direction to go in practice, but we had such a good car for qualifying.”

Frankie Montecalvo led the pro-am class in his #12 Lexus, impressively leading a phalanx of Pro class cars. “It’s absolutely my favorite racetrack that really suits our RC F,” he said.

Tommy Milner will start fourth in the #4 Corvette, seven tenths off his stable-mate Sims, ahead of Harry Tincknell (#64 Multimatic Ford Mustang), Madison Snow (Paul Miller Racing BMW M4), Mario Farnbacher (#23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage) and Marvin Kirchhofer (Pfaff Motorsports McLaren 720S).

Fraga fastest in FP2 from van der Zande, Lexus tops GTD

Brazil’s Filipe Fraga set the pace in second practice for the IMSA SportsCar Championship at the LMP2-led round at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Riley’s Fraga beat Renger van der Zande (Tower Motorsport) and Colin Braun (Crowdstrike by APR) in the 90-minute session, which featured a 34-car entry.

The premier class GTP hybrids have taken a break from the fearsome 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course near Toronto, formerly known as Mosport. Although those cars weren’t here, some of the top drivers still made the trip north of the border to drive the LMP2 machinery.

Van der Zande set the benchmark at 1m08.351s in Tower’s Oreca, which was beaten by Fraga’s Riley-run version after 10 minutes with a 1m08.221s. That put him 0.13s clear at the top of the timesheets, which is where he stayed.

Colin Braun was third quickest in Crowdstrike’s entry, three tenths off the pace but just clear of Ben Hanley’s #2 car for United Autosports.

Friday’s pacesetter Louis Deletraz was only fifth this time for AO Racing, ahead of Scott Huffaker (TDS Racing), Tom Dillmann (Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports) and Filipe Albuquerque in the #22 United machine.

In GTD, Frankie Montecalvo set the early pace at 1m15.68s before Pro class stable-mate Hawksworth beat that with 1m14.821s.

Madison Snow split the Lexus lockout with 1m14.952s, a tenth away from Hawksworth in his Paul Miller Racing BMW M4.

Corvette Racing then entered the party, with Tommy Milner snatching second in the #4 Z06 GT3.R, ahead of Alexander Sims in the sister #3 car. Seb Priaulx rounded out the top five in AO Racing’s Porsche 911.

Loris Spinelli set the pro-am place in Forte Racing’s Lamborghini Huracan, ahead of Montecalvo, whose Lexus slipped back to seventh overall in the GT ranks.

Deletraz beats van der Zande by 0.003s in FP1

AO Racing’s Louis Deletraz set the pace in opening practice for the IMSA SportsCar Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Deletraz beat Renger van der Zande (Tower Motorsports) and Ben Hanley (United Autosports) in the 90-minute session, which featured a 34-car entry.

The premier class GTP hybrids have taken a break from the fearsome 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course near Toronto, formerly known as Mosport. Although those cars weren’t here, some of the top drivers still made the trip north of the border to drive the LMP2 machinery.

The warfare for the top spot between the moonlighters saw Wayne Taylor Racing Acura regular Deletraz setting the pace at 1m07.895s in AO Racing’s Oreca, 0.003s quicker than van der Zande in Tower’s similar car, who’s usually seen piloting Chip Ganassi Racing’s Cadillac.

Those early lap times were never bettered during the session. Hanley was third at 1m08.382s, ahead of another GTP refugee, Filipe Albuquerque, in the second United entry.

Colin Braun, who’s always been rapid around here, was fifth fastest in his regular Crowdstrike by APR machine. Tom Dillmann (Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports) was next up, ahead of Filipe Fraga (Riley), Ryan Dalziel (Era Motorsport) and Pipo Derani (AF Corse).

The session was briefly red flagged for an off at Turn 10 by Daniel Goldburg in the #22 United Autosports entry. He was able to continue, as was Ben Keating in the sister #2 car, who went off at Turn 3.

In GTD, there was an early Corvette Racing 1-2, as Nicky Catsburg led stable-mate Antonio Garcia by 0.168s, with a lap time of 1m15.714s in his Z06 GT3.R.

Alexander Sims took the #3 car ahead of the #4 with 10 minutes to go in the session with a 1m15.696s, eclipsing Catsburg’s time by 0.018s.

Ross Gunn was third fastest in the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage, while the quickest pro-am class driver was Robby Foley in Turner Motorsport’s BMW M4.

Bryan Sellers (Paul Miller Racing BMW), Seb Priaulx (AO Porsche) and Ben Barnicoat (Vasser Sullivan Lexus) were next up, each in all-Pro entries.

Albuquerque steps down to LMP2 for overall IMSA victory bid at Mosport

IMSA SportsCar Championship star Filipe Albuquerque will drop down a division – but still be in the reckoning for an overall race win – at Mosport later this month.

Albuquerque, who normally drives for the factory-backed Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura squad, will hop across for a one-off IMSA LMP2 outing with United Autosports in Canada on July 14.

The Portuguese sportscar ace, who has 13 wins in IMSA’s top division, can step down to P2 as the GTP class isn’t racing at Mosport this year.

Albuquerque drove for United at last month’s Le Mans 24 Hours, sharing with Ben Keating and Ben Hanley, but the car was classified a disappointing 42nd. The sister car won the event, in the hands of Oliver Jarvis, Nolan Siegel and Bijoy Garg.

Albuquerque will team up with Daniel Goldburg in the #22 United Autosports ORECA 07, racing in place of Paul di Resta who will be fulfilling his full-season Hypercar commitments with Peugeot Sport in the World Endurance Championship’s Six Hours of Sao Paolo.

“I am really looking forward to race in Mosport with United,” said Albuquerque. “We will be racing for the overall victory.

“I had the chance to meet Daniel already and we had a great feeling. On top of that, I got a nice warm up at Le Mans to get back into the LMP2.

“We want to fight for the win for sure.”

Albuquerque has never won at Mosport but is a winner this year after scoring victory with Ricky Taylor at Detroit last month.

He previously won both the WEC and European Le Mans Series LMP2 class crowns with United.

“It’s always a pleasure to race with Filipe,” said United Autosports CEO, Richard Dean, “So with Paul fulfilling his commitments with Peugeot in the WEC, it was an easy choice.

“Filipe is super quick, reliable and a fantastic mentor for other drivers… I’m sure Daniel will learn a lot from him in Canada.

“Sadly, the 24 Hours of Le Mans didn’t go to plan for Filipe and the United Autosports #23 LMP2 crew this year, so this is our opportunity to celebrate victory together in 2024.”
