Pourchaire in line for Peugeot Hypercar reserve role


Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire is under consideration for a test and reserve role with Peugeot’s World Endurance Championship squad along with former sparring partner Clement Novalak.

Poruchaire, who also raced with Arrow McLaren in IndyCar this year, and LMP2 regular Novalak have entered the frame to replace Malthe Jakobsen on his graduation to a race seat in place of Nico Muller for 2025 after taking part in the official WEC rookie test in Bahrain earlier this month.

Peugeot has stated that it wanted to take a look at some new drivers and confirmed that they are in contention for the seventh spot in the Peugeot Sport WEC squad.

Peugeot Sport technical director Olivier Jansonnie said: “It is always interesting to evaluate drivers for the future. The idea of the rookie test for us was to test some proper rookies.

“We looked at some potential drivers: we wanted someone with strong single-seater experience and recent prototype experience, and that is Clement [who raced in the European Le Mans Series with Inter Europol in 2024]. Theo has a bit of a different profile but is obviously very talented.”

When asked if Pourchaire and Novalak were being evaluated for a potential reserve role, Jansonnie replied in the affirmative. He confirmed that Peugeot would go into 2025 with a seventh driver, but he stressed that no decisions had been made.

Pourchaire stated that he was open to a reserve role with Peugeot alongside a proper return to competition after a season in which he started out in Super Formula with Team Impul before switching to what turned out to be a disjointed IndyCar campaign.

“A reserve driver role in Hypercar, why not?” said the 2023 F2 title winner, who holds a similar position in Formula 1 with Sauber. “It could help me have a full-time role in the future, but for sure I am looking for a drive to actually race.”

Should Pourchaire land a Peugeot drive, it is likely that he would be placed in LMP2 next year to gain race experience. He was spotted with the Algarve Pro Racing P2 squad at Paul Ricard during a Goodyear tyre test last week.

Novalak, a race winner in F2 in ’23, said: “If I could dream of anything it would be getting a reserve role [in Hypercar] and doing the ELMS and the IMSA SportsCar Championships [in P2],” said the London-based Franco-Swiss.

Pourchaire and Novalak are not under consideration for race seats at Peugeot for next year.

The team will go into the new season with an unchanged roster in its two 9X8 2024 Le Mans Hypercars with the exception of Jakobsen. But the Dane will not necessarily slot in as a like-for-like replacement for Muller in the #93 entry alongside Mikkel Jensen and Jean-Eric Vergne.

Jansonnie explained that the final decision on the line-ups in each car had yet to be made.

Peugeot shuffled drivers between cars for 2024 when Stoffel Vandoorne moved up from the reserve role on the departure of Gustavo Menezes. He took Menezes’s seat in the #94 car, driving alongside Loic Duval and Paul di Resta, who swapped places with Muller between seasons.

Pourchaire gets Peugeot Hypercar chance in Bahrain WEC test


Reigning Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire will get his first run in a sportscar prototype when he joins Peugeot for the World Endurance Championship’s Bahrain rookie test next month.

Pourchaire is one of the two drivers to be selected by the French manufacturer to drive the 9X8 2024 LMH at the Bahrain International Circuit on 3 November, along with his former F2 rival Clement Novalak.

Pourchaire had previously revealed his ambition to race in the WEC, telling Autosport that he «watches almost every race» and that the Le Mans 24 Hours is an event that he «would like to do one day».

However, there will be no immediate opportunities available at Peugeot’s Hypercar squad, which has already locked in its line-up for 2025 after promoting Malthe Jakobsen to replace new Porsche factory driver Nico Muller.

«For Team Peugeot TotalEnergies, these Rookie Tests in Bahrain bring a fresh perspective, even though reconditioning the cars after the race requires a lot of work from the entire team,» said Peugeot technical director Olivier Jansonnie.

«It is always very motivating and rewarding to see young drivers arrive with wide eyes, discovering the team, the car, etc.»

«We selected two different profiles. Theo is single-seater-oriented with an already impressive track record and is recognised as one of the single-seater hopefuls.

«Clement has more endurance experience with notable results in ELMS, particularly a second place in LMP2 at the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans. His statistics in this discipline impressed us. I think it’s an interesting combination.

«They will be guided by Paul di Resta and Malthe Jakobsen, who also went through this process before being appointed full-time next season. It is always very interesting for us to get technical feedback from fresh perspectives.»

Pourchaire is still searching for a drive next year after admitting recently that he doesn’t have a «lot of money to put on the table».

The Frenchman started the season in the Super Formula series with Team Impul, but ended up splitting with the squad after just one round when an opportunity came to enter IndyCar with Arrow McLaren.

However, his relationship with Arrow McLaren in IndyCar also turned out to be short-lived, as the team replaced him with Indy NXT graduate Nolan Siegel at around the mid-way point of the year. Pourchaire returned to the outfit for a one-off appearance at Toronto in place of Alexander Rossi, but has been out of action since then.

Novalak, who previously raced against Pourchaire in F2, also left the category after 2023 in favour of a new career in sportscar racing.

Competing for InterEuropol Competition in an ORECA-Gibson 07, he finished on the podium in the recent European Le Mans Series event at Portimao. A maiden outing at Le Mans yielded a second-place finish in the LMP2 class.

Audi admits to youth versus experience dilemma over F1 driver choice


The Audi-owned Sauber Formula 1 team has admitted to facing a youth versus experience dilemma over its driver choice for next year, as it ponders what is best for the long term.

The German manufacturer had hoped to lure Carlos Sainz for 2025 to become team-mate to Nico Hulkenberg, as it transitions to become a full works team from 2026.

However, amid uncertainty about the competitiveness of the project, Sainz elected to join Williams instead.

Newly appointed Audi COO and CTO Mattia Binotto has singled out sorting out the driver situation as one of his first tasks, and is eager to get the matter sorted as soon as possible.

However, he says that before committing, he needs to agree with Audi chiefs whether it goes for a well-established driver like Valtteri Bottas, or goes for a youngster like its reserve Theo Pourchaire or rising F2 star Gabriel Bortoleto.

Speaking about his thoughts on the driver choice for 2025, Binotto said: “It’s a couple of weeks I’m there, so it’s early for me.

“But it’s definitely something that we need to judge: are we going for experience or something else?

“This is a project which is looking to a long term objective, so [the question is] what’s the best for us from now to the final goal?

“Is it more having short term experience and then moving to something different? We need to decide and today I think we are not in the position to answer.

“We are certainly listening to all potential drivers. We are certainly evaluating what the pros and the cons are for the best compromise.”

Binotto said the team did not want to wait too long before making a call, as there were wider issues in lifting performance that it could not afford to get distracted from.

“We will decide as soon as possible, no doubt, because we need to set up the team for next year and for the future,” he said.

“We need to, as well, stop any speculations, because it is not in our interest. But so far, there is no decision on what will be best.”

While incumbent Bottas is understood to be favourite to be given a contract extension, the team says that young drivers Pourchaire and Bortoleto have their chances too. However, they are not the only ones under consideration.

Binotto added: “Theo is our reserve driver today, so somehow he’s already part of the family, and no doubt that he’s in our list.

“Gabriel is doing very well today in F2, I think he has shown to be a great talent, and certainly we are looking to what he’s doing — as we are looking to many others.

“I don’t see these are the only names on which we are focusing our attention. There are many names in the list, with great potential, great expertise, great experience.

“Again, it’s a matter of we need to judge what’s most important for us in the short, medium and long term, and go for a clear plan — which today I do not have really an answer for now.”

Speaking exclusively to Autosport about his F1 prospects, Pourchaire said that after winning the F2 title last year, he did not know what more he could do to show he deserved a grand prix seat.

“I’m asking myself this question, too,” he said. “You know, every day. I don’t know.

“I did my best on the track. For sure, some people say that winning the championship in the third year in F2 is not looking great.

“But I won it when I was 20 years old. I’m the youngest ever race winner in F2, in F3 — so I don’t have to prove anything on the track.

“I just need an opportunity. That’s it.”

Sauber F1 team looking to find Pourchaire a new IndyCar seat


The Sauber Formula 1 team is looking to find reserve driver Theo Pourchaire a new home in IndyCar after being dropped by Arrow McLaren.

Last week it was announced Arrow McLaren had signed a multi-year deal with Nolan Siegel to run its #6 Chevrolet from last weekend’s Laguna Seca round onwards.

The news came only weeks after McLaren had confirmed 20-year-old Formula 2 champion Pourchaire would remain in the car for the remainder of 2024, having done a deal with Sauber to loan its academy driver as a replacement for the injured David Malukas.

With the Frenchman having left his seat in Super Formula to race in IndyCar and immediately impressing on his first outings, the news of him being replaced came as a shock.

Speaking exclusively to Autosport, Sauber F1 team representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi said the team «cannot be happy» at Pourchaire’s deal being cancelled, but understood McLaren’s position and would instead look for an alternative ride.

«McLaren needed to change its strategy on the drivers and we understand their position,» Alunni Bravi said.

«Of course, we cannot be happy, mainly because Theo has lost the opportunity to have a strong racing programme.

«This is something that can happen in motorsport, we cannot blame McLaren. But we need just now to look at the future and find another good opportunity for Theo.

«We are already working with him to secure another seat in IndyCar, hopefully we can do some races this year.»

«We wanted for him to have an important racing programme because we want to have him always ready to jump into the car, if necessary.

«He showed immediately that he can compete for a top 10 position.»

For the remaining nine rounds of the 2024 IndyCar season, Dale Coyne Racing appears to be the most logical choice for Sauber to place Pourchaire, with the team yet to announce who will take over the No. 51 Honda-powered entry when the series heads to Mid-Ohio in two weeks.

Despite missing three rounds, including May’s Indianapolis 500, Pourchaire could yet contend for rookie of the year honours, having scored his first top 10 in Detroit.

Alunni Bravi said the team’s priority is for Pourchaire to be placed in a top IndyCar seat for the 2025 season, with the Swiss squad chasing more experienced options such as Ferrari exile Carlos Sainz for its F1 team.

«We are focused for him to have a strong 2025 programme with one of the best IndyCar teams,» the Italian said.

«This is a very demanding championship, different track layouts, track characteristics, a lot of very experienced and professional drivers with specific knowledge of the category.

«So, it’s a good environment for a driver to grow. Now we can’t lose any other opportunities for him to race, because for any driver just the role of reserve driver is not enough to keep them in a good racing shape.»

While Sainz also considering a move to Williams and an eleventh-hour bid from Alpine, Alunni Bravi re-iterated Sauber — which formally becomes Audi’s works team in 2026 — is talking to «four Formula 1 race winners» who are free agents next year; Sainz, current driver Valtteri Bottas and Alpine duo Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.

«There are in the Formula 1 market four Formula 1 race winners and we are discussing with all of them,» he said.

«One of the main characteristics we want is a long-term commitment with the Audi project.»
